Creating a WordPress Post

Write and publish blog articles on your WordPress site with categories, tags, and featured images.

Posts are for blog articles, news, and other dated content. Unlike pages, posts appear in your blog feed in reverse chronological order.

Step 1: Add a New Post

Go to Posts → Add New (or click + New → Post from the admin bar).

Step 2: Write Your Content

Add a title, then write your post in the block editor. Use Heading blocks to break up long articles.

Step 3: Set Categories

In the right panel under Categories, check existing categories or click Add New Category. Categories are broad topics (e.g., "Company News," "How-To Guides").

Step 4: Add Tags

Tags are specific keywords related to the post. Add several relevant tags (e.g., "WordPress," "hosting," "security").

Step 5: Set a Featured Image

Click Set Featured Image in the right panel. Upload or select a photo — this appears at the top of the post and when shared on social media.

Step 6: Write an Excerpt

Add a manual excerpt (right panel → Excerpt) — a short summary that appears on the blog listing page. If you skip this, WordPress auto-generates one.

Step 7: Publish

Click Publish or set a future date to schedule.

  • Aim for at least 300 words for SEO value
  • Add internal links to other pages/posts on your site
  • Install Yoast SEO or Rank Math to guide your on-page SEO
