How to Use the cPanel File Manager

Browse, upload, edit, and manage your website files directly from your browser.

File Manager gives you full access to your hosting account's file system without needing an FTP client.

Opening File Manager

Log in to cPanel → Files → File Manager. It opens to your home directory by default. Your website files live in public_html.

Basic Operations

Upload files: Click Upload in the toolbar, then drag files or click to browse.

Create a folder: Click New Folder, name it, and choose the location.

Edit a file: Right-click any text file (HTML, PHP, CSS, JS) → Edit to open the built-in code editor.

Delete files: Select files/folders and click Delete. Check "Skip the trash" to permanently delete.

Rename: Right-click a file → Rename.

Move/Copy: Select files → click Move or Copy → enter the destination path.

Extracting Archives

Upload a .zip file, right-click it, and select Extract to unzip it in place.

File Permissions

Right-click any file or folder → Change Permissions to set read/write/execute permissions (e.g., 644 for files, 755 for folders).

Tips

  • Your website's root is at /public_html — don't put files outside this unless you know what you're doing
  • Use the search bar to find files by name across your account
  • Enable "Show Hidden Files" in Settings to see .htaccess and other dotfiles
